Je, tu, il, nous, vous, ils\u2026 You know those words. But when a personal pronoun is used as a direct object, or indirect object, the matter changes. Here you can read when to use which word.<\/p>\n
In Dutch you probably do it right automatically, and you don’t have to parse a sentence. In French it is necessary to know whether you are dealing with a direct or indirect object.<\/p>\n
You find the direct object in a sentence by asking Who? or what? (what ? Quoi ?<\/em>) to set. Good to know: verbs like aimer, attendre, donner, ecouter, parler, regarder…<\/em> automatically ask for a direct object.<\/p>\n You recognize an indirect object because the word ‘on’ is already in front of it, or you can add ‘on’ to it in your mind: the qui? the quoi? here? quoi?<\/em> The personal pronouns come before the finite verb. Unless there is a whole verb in the sentence, because then it comes before it. The personal pronouns you use as direct objects are in French:
me\/m’, te\/t’, la\/la\/l’, nous, vous, les.<\/em>
Tu m’entends?<\/em> (Do you hear me?)
Your pense que je te vois.<\/em> (I think I see you.)
Je la vois marcher.<\/em> (I see her walking.)
Il va nous rencontrer.<\/em> (He’s going to meet us.)
Elle vous connais bien.<\/em> (She knows them well\/She knows you well.)

The personal pronouns that you use as indirect objects are in French: me\/m’, te\/t’, lui, nous, vous, leur.<\/em>
Tu m’as donn\u00e9 un gift.<\/em> (You gave me a present.)
Il t’ach\u00e8te une bague.<\/em> (He buys me a ring.)
Je lui ai donn\u00e9 la lettre.<\/em> (I gave him the letter.)

In a negation you put ne\u2026pas<\/em> around the direct or indirect object and the verb: Je ne la vois pas<\/em> (I don’t see her). Je ne lui donne pas de present<\/em> (I didn’t give him a present).
If there is a whole verb in the sentence, then that verb falls outside, but the direct object is inside: Je ne vois pas la marcher<\/em> (I don’t see her walking). If you are dealing with an indirect object, you put both the personal pronoun and the entire verb outside the negation: Je ne vais pas lui donner mes nouvelles<\/em> (I’m not going to tell him my news.)<\/p>\nFor the advanced: ‘\u00c0’, ‘sur’ and ‘de’<\/em><\/h3>\n

songer \u00e0 + lui, elle, eux, elles<\/em> (to think\/dream about someone)
avoir recours \u00e0 \/ recourir \u00e0 + lui, elle, eux, elles<\/em> (to appeal to someone)
faire appel \u00e0 + lui, elle, eux, elles<\/em> (to call on someone for help)<\/p>\n
Je compte sur Beno\u00eet.<\/em>> You compte sur lui.<\/em> (I’m counting on Beno\u00eet.> I’m counting on him.)
