French music tips

Want to learn French while listening to great music? There are plenty of tips, but we will stick to 5 artists.

Stromae. Formidable—who doesn’t know this song? “Formidable, formidable. Tu étais formidable, j’étais fort minable.” Last year, Stromae released the powerful track L’enfer.

Zaz. The singer Zaz has been making a name for herself for many years. She has recorded several covers of songs you undoubtedly know, such as Sous le ciel de Paris and La vie en rose. However, you should also listen to her other tracks, which feature a mix of jazz, soul, folk, and French variété.

Françoise Hardy. The melancholic sounds of Françoise Hardy are perfect for listening closely to her lyrics. You likely know Tous les garçons et les filles, but those are by no means the only songs that are well worth your time.

Clara Luciani. One of the biggest pop sensations in France at the moment is Clara Luciani. She sings pop songs with a deep, warm voice. La Grenade was the track that gave her a breakthrough in 2018. Also highly recommended is her version of the French translation of the Abba song The Winner Takes It All: Bravo tu as gagné.

Carla Bruni. Lyrics that are not too difficult, usually accompanied only by a guitar. Carla Bruni’s music makes learning French even easier. Be sure to listen to her debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit.

Do you have Spotify? If so, you can often follow along with the lyrics.
